TALKING NEWSPAPER

A free service which helps visually impaired people stay abreast of local news.

THE ALNWICK LIONS TALKING NEWSPAPER BEGAN HAS OPERATED SINCE 1981.

Alnwick Lions fund the newspaper and it is a free service to the users. We serve blind and visually impaired people in Alnwick District but have had customers well outside the district. The Newspaper goes out weekly on Thursdays on a USB Memory stick format and contains a selection of the local news as reported in the Northumberland Gazette. We try to present local content but this also will contain information from county and national magazines for the visually impaired and other items from time to time.

The newspaper is recorded by a team of volunteers working to a rota system at Weavers Court in Alnwick. There are various areas of responsibilities such as production, reading and recording within the team to produce the master copy.
Distribution of the recorded paper (USB) is by the Post Office using standard “visually impaired pouches” with a reversible address label on each to enable their return to us. The return address is a Post Office Box number. There are no postal costs to the clients.
At this time we have about 40+ clients and would be very happy to increase that number. We have a number of USB players available to be issued on loan to new users.
